Fit Energy plans gas fuel cell data center on mined land in Newport Township, Pennsylvania
Fit Energy announced on October 6, 2026 a fuel cell power and data center project in Newport Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, which received township zoning approval for both uses in August. On-site power will come from natural gas fuel cells supplied by FuelCell Energy, with the aim of reducing reliance on the regional grid. Engineering and remaining permitting are underway ahead of construction, and the source (a company press release) gives no MW or capex figures.
Why it matters
The project pairs on-site gas fuel cells with local zoning approval and a planned Community Benefits Agreement, a template for builders looking to limit grid dependence while securing community support.
